Sperm DNA Fragmentation – The Hidden Male Infertility Factor Most Couples Miss

Sperm DNA fragmentation refers to breaks or damage in the genetic material carried inside sperm, and it can exist even when a standard semen analysis reports normal count, motility, and morphology. High fragmentation levels are linked to lower fertilisation rates, poorer embryo development, and a higher chance of miscarriage, which is why couples with unexplained infertility or repeated IVF failure are often tested for it specifically. A routine semen report only checks what’s visible under a microscope, not the integrity of the DNA sitting inside each sperm cell.
